About Canva

Canva is a graphic design platform that enables users to create a wide range of visual content, including presentations, social media graphics, posters, and marketing materials, using a simple drag-and-drop interface.

As part of Canva Foundation’s mission is to Be a Force for Good, the company launched the The Canva Education to Employment (E2E) program. The program empowers young aspiring designers by providing comprehensive training and support for a career in graphic design.

Project

Objective

To empower Forbes Advisor’s readers in identifying and selecting the right B2B SaaS solutions and help them in making informed choices on B2B SaaS solutions.

Target Audience

Forbes Advisor serves as a valuable resource for C-suite executives, IT professionals, and small-to-medium business owners who are navigating the rapidly evolving SaaS space.

Challenge

B2B SaaS is a highly competitive space. Many tech publications, software review sites, and industry blogs vying for visibility on Google’s first page. The challenge for Forbes Advisor is to produce in-depth and authentic reviews and guides that offer readers a unique and value-driven perspective on B2B SaaS solutions.

Analyzing the Problem

The main challenge for this project was to create lesson plans that enabled students to learn design and use the Canva platform. Each lesson would run for 2 hours. The curriculum had to blend online and face-to-face teaching methods to ensure all participants remain motivated. To foster engagement, the lesson plans should incorporate interactive elements such as group activities, hands-on projects, and real-time feedback. I had to research multimedia resources—like video tutorials and live demonstrations—to keep students captivated. In addition, I had to incorporate activities that made it easy for students to  gain confidence in using Canva as a professional tool.

Content Strategy for Creating the Lesson Plan

Step 1: Define the Lesson Structure

The first step in creating a Canva lesson plan is to establish a clear structure, including the time limit, audience level, learning objectives, and outcomes. For instance, this module on color theory is set for 120 minutes and targets Level 1 students. I wrote learning objectives and learning outcomes to make it easy for teachers to understand what students should achieve by the end of the lesson.

Step 2: Design Engaging Activities

Next, I had to brainstorm a mix of discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises that cater to various learning styles and environments.

For example, the introduction section consists of a group discussion about students' perceptions of color encourages active participation. This was followed by an exercise exploring color combinations, so students can share their work and engage in peer discussions.

Step 3: Incorporate Technology and Tools

I had to create teacher demos to ensure teachers integrate Canva's tools and features throughout the lesson plan. That way, students can gain firsthand experience while working on their projects.

For example, the teacher demo on the Color Wheel is designed to teach students how to create their own color palette in Canva.

Step 4: Conclude and Reflect

Finally, teachers conclude the lesson with a wrap-up session that reinforces key takeaways and encourages reflection. This may involve group discussions where students can share their observations and experiences throughout the lesson.

Gathering student feedback was crucial to enhance the overall learning experience in future iterations of the course.

Informative Videos

The lesson plan on color theory significantly contributed to shaping two informative videos that delve into the principles of using color in graphic design within Canva.

What is Color Theory?

This video introduces the fundamentals of color theory, explaining the role of color combinations, the color wheel, and how to create trendy color palettes. It serves as the theoretical foundation for understanding how colors can influence design decisions.

How to Use Color Theory?

In this follow-up video, viewers learn how to practically apply the concepts covered in the first video using Canva. This section emphasizes hands-on skills, guiding users through the process of implementing color theory principles to enhance their graphic design projects effectively. Together, these videos provide a comprehensive learning experience, combining theory with practical application to empower users in their design journey.
